The 8 Best Creative Cronuts in Adelaide You Have to Try

Cronuts are a delightful blend of croissants and doughnuts, deep-fried like a doughnut but made from flaky laminated dough. While they originated in New York, created by French pastry chef Dominique Ansel in 2013, you don’t need to travel that far to enjoy them.

Adelaide is home to plenty of bakeries and cafés serving this unique treat, each offering creative flavour combinations. Curious to find the best, I explored the city with my wallet in hand (literally) to uncover standout options. Here’s my list of the best local shops guaranteed to satisfy your cronut cravings.

For artisan cronuts, visit Skala Bakery. It has been serving freshly baked treats in Adelaide since 1952. Beyond cronuts, you’ll find other baked goods, such as croissants, cakes, danishes, and more.

Here, you’ll find a variety of cronuts, ranging from seasonal flavours to unique fillings. They’re not scared of trying out different flavour combinations, which result in decadent and innovative cronuts. Plus, they use controlled fermentation techniques, resulting in an enhanced flavour and texture.

I was not a fan of coconuts until I tasted their coconut cream and lime cronut for $6. It was flaky, and the creaminess from the coconut was complemented with the zestiness of the lime filling.

Tip: If you enjoy chocolate, their mocha can add an extra layer of flavour that pairs wonderfully with cronuts.

Abbots and Kinney is another great place to buy your cronuts due to their combination of classic techniques with creative flavours. You’ll taste choc mint cronut, raspberry chocolate ganache cronut, and more flavour combinations you can imagine.

Beyond cronuts, they also make amazing croissants, sfogliatelle, Danish pastries, and other pastries. Plus, you’ll enjoy reading their baked goods’ clever names, like the Son of a Baci, which is a twice-baked chocolate croissant!

My favourite here is the twice-baked berry and almond cronut, priced at $8.40. It has a flaky, buttery exterior, filled with luscious berry compote, and finished with a sprinkle of almond flakes. The result is a sweet, tangy pastry with a nutty crunch that is not too sweet.

Tip: Visit their website to explore recipes for some of their pastries, including their signature croissants!

Of course, don’t sleep on their other products, like handmade chocolate truffles, crepes, and other baked goods.

I discovered this gem while exploring Rundle Mall and found out that they also make cronuts. The best one I tasted was their chocolate hazelnut priced at $6.50. It has a rich chocolate hazelnut inside a flaky pastry shell and is drizzled with chocolate and crushed hazelnuts—perfect for chocolate lovers like me.

Tip: They also have a cafe inside! Pair your cronut with their affogato. The espresso poured over creamy gelato complements the sweet, flaky layers perfectly.

Experience desserts fit for celebrities at Phoenix Sweets in Hyde Park! This charming bakery, originally from Hong Kong, is known for crafting cakes for actors and actresses.

Their Asian influence shines through in cronut flavours like matcha green tea, alongside more classic options. The pastries are less sweet but still packed with flavour, making them a lighter treat.

For $6, I tried their matcha green tea cronut and loved its unique taste. The earthy, slightly bitter matcha was perfectly balanced by the sweetness of the flaky pastry.

Tip: Don’t miss their homemade strawberry puree jam! Its bold strawberry flavour pairs beautifully with their cronuts and other baked treats.

In addition to cronuts, the bakery also makes excellent cannoli, tiramisu, and zeppoli, giving you plenty of options.

I know the Mars Bar chocolate is a sweet treat, but combined with a cronut, it was like a match made in heaven! For $6, I could taste the rich and indulgent combination of chocolate and caramel, while the flaky and buttery cronut contradicts the sweetness, gooey filling.

Tip: Follow them on Facebook! Jenny’s Bakery often announces limited-time cronut flavours on their page so you won’t miss out.

Inventive cronut flavours await you at Please Say Please. It’s a charming café that not only makes some of the best coffee in the city but also unique cronuts like the Toblerone cronuts, Bischoff cronuts, and popcorn cronuts.

The best part is that the flavours always change along with the seasons or for special events like Christmas, keeping it exciting and fresh for customers to get their hands on.

My favorite though is their espresso martini cronut for $6. The flaky shell was infused with coffee and filled with a smooth espresso cream then topped with a dust of cocoa powder. It perfectly captured the essence of the classic cocktail and was the perfect treat for coffee lovers such as myself!

Tip: The espresso martini cronut is available only on certain days, often Thursdays. Pre-ordering is recommended to avoid missing out.

The Bakery on O’Connell is another spot in Adelaide to try creative cronuts. They’re known for bold flavours like bacon and egg, chocolate mud cake, and popcorn.

They also release limited-edition cronuts to match the seasons. At Christmas, you might find a passionfruit pavlova New York cronut, while spring brings fruity options like lemon and blueberry.

My favourite season was summer when they introduced the “cronetto”—a cronut shaped like a cone. It was filled with custard and chocolate, and topped with nuts for that classic cornetto crunch. Fresh and warm, it was the perfect summer treat.

The Providore is another great spot in Adelaide to satisfy your cronut cravings. They offer flavours like lemon curd, raspberry jam, and peanut butter and jelly, alongside a selection of baked goods, including biscuits, muffins, and homemade cakes.

Keep an eye out for their new and seasonal cronut flavours. In 2017, their crème brûlée and honeycomb cronut became an instant hit! Occasionally, they release limited-edition flavours, like the raspberry mascarpone cream cronut, which was available for one weekend in October.

I was lucky enough to try the raspberry mascarpone cream cronut. The lightly sweetened mascarpone cream, infused with raspberry, was topped with a raspberry glaze and finished with raspberry candy. I hope it makes a comeback!

Tip: Don’t miss their chocolate fountain experience. It’s a fun treat, especially if you’re visiting with friends or family.
